TABORA, Tanzania – The new passenger terminal at Tabora Airport is 98% complete and poised to begin operations, marking a significant milestone in the development of western Tanzania’s transport infrastructure and economic potential.
Transport Minister Prof. Makame Mbarawa conducted a final inspection of the facility, expressing satisfaction with the progress of the TZS 27.93 billion project. The modern terminal, designed to serve 120 passengers simultaneously, represents a substantial upgrade to the region’s aviation capabilities.
“I have chosen to start my visit in Tabora because it is a strategic region,” stated Prof. Mbarawa during his inspection. “Railways from Makutupora to Tabora, Isaka, Mwanza, and from Tabora to Uvinza, Bunjumbura to Congo all make Tabora a hub for international transport.”
Comprehensive Facility Features
The new terminal boasts extensive facilities designed to meet modern aviation standards and passenger needs:
- Office spaces for various airport departments
- Commercial business areas and retail shops
- Modern air traffic control tower
- Parking capacity for 54 vehicles
- 6.25 kilometer security perimeter fencing
- Advanced weather monitoring station
- Power infrastructure including 1000kVA and 40kVA generators
- Solar lighting systems and 1250kVA transformer
Project engineer Raphael Stanislaus Mlimaji, manager of Tanroad in Tabora, confirmed that all critical systems are in place for the terminal’s operational launch.
Strategic Economic Importance
The airport development aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s broader vision to transform Tabora into a 24-hour business hub through comprehensive upgrades to infrastructure, energy, and services. The enhanced airport is expected to position the region as a center for tourism, trade, and investment.
Tabora District Commissioner Pendo Wella, representing the Regional Commissioner, thanked the national government for the project and assured that regional authorities and citizens would maintain the facility to maximize benefits for local residents and investors.
Tabora Region, with approximately 3.3 million residents, ranks as Tanzania’s third most populous region. The area is known for agricultural production including cotton, tobacco, groundnuts, and sunflowers, and serves as Tanzania’s largest honey producer. The improved airport connectivity is expected to boost these economic sectors while attracting new investment opportunities.
