Manyara, Tanzania – The Itracom Fertilizer Limited phosphate mine, located at Vilima Vitatu in Babati District, Manyara Region, has emerged as a major contributor to Tanzania’s industrial mineral sector, generating Sh1.29 billion in government revenue since starting operations in 2023. The development underscores the growing economic impact of phosphate mining on national revenue, local communities, and regional development.

The revenue figures were disclosed by Geologist Waziri Mkupe, speaking on behalf of the Manyara Resident Mines Officer, Godfrey Nyanda. According to Mkupe, the government earnings have been collected through royalties and mineral inspection fees from both domestic sales and exports, highlighting the structured contribution of the mining sector to public coffers.

Since the commencement of production, Itracom Fertilizer Limited has mined 69,929 tonnes of phosphate minerals, valued at Sh36.99 billion. These minerals are sold both locally and internationally, with domestic sales focused on Nala in Dodoma Region and exports primarily to Burundi.

Mkupe elaborated that domestic sales between December 16, 2023, and February 24, 2026, accounted for 22,686 tonnes valued at Sh9.07 billion. From this, the government collected Sh90.74 million in royalties and an equal amount in inspection fees. Export operations, meanwhile, saw the issuance of 13 permits for 47,243 tonnes of phosphate worth Sh27.92 billion shipped to Burundi, generating Sh837.64 million in royalties and Sh279.21 million in inspection fees for the government.

Beyond financial contributions, the mine has had a tangible impact on socio-economic development in surrounding communities through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The company has supported infrastructure and educational development projects, including the construction of Vilima Vitatu Primary School, teachers’ housing, and ongoing work on a girls’ secondary school dormitory. These initiatives aim to improve access to quality education and strengthen community wellbeing.

Mkupe emphasized the broader strategic importance of phosphate mining, noting that Itracom Fertilizer Limited serves as a model for how industrial minerals can create employment, boost government revenue, and support local communities simultaneously.

He also highlighted the investment potential of Manyara Region, encouraging Tanzanians to explore opportunities not only in phosphate mining but also in the extraction of other mineral resources. The region is endowed with gold, moonstone, green tourmaline, amethyst, green aventurine, limestone, azurite, salt, muscovite mica, feldspar, and quartz crystal, offering diverse avenues for both domestic and foreign investors.

The success of Itracom Fertilizer Limited demonstrates that well-managed mining operations can play a pivotal role in Tanzania’s economic diversification strategy. By leveraging its mineral wealth responsibly, Manyara Region is positioning itself as a hub for industrial minerals, contributing to national development while enhancing local livelihoods. With continued investment and sustainable practices, phosphate and other mineral resources in Manyara are expected to remain key drivers of economic growth, government revenue, and community development for years to come
