In one of the largest infrastructure investments in its 25-year history, Vodacom Tanzania has launched its Vision 2030 strategy, a comprehensive technology modernization program valued at over USD 100 million . Announced in September 2025 as the company celebrates its 25th anniversary, this initiative is designed to revolutionize connectivity and accelerate digital inclusion across Tanzania, supporting the nation’s socio-economic growth for the next quarter-century .
A Multi-Faceted Modernization Drive
The multi-million-dollar investment will be channeled into several key areas to fundamentally upgrade the country’s digital infrastructure. The program’s scope is extensive, targeting both urban centers and underserved rural communities .
- Network Expansion and Enhancement: The core of the project involves upgrading thousands of network sites across the country . To date, over 1,000 sites have already been modernized in regions including the Lake Zone, Southern Highlands, and parts of central Tanzania . This will significantly expand 4G coverage and lay the groundwork for 5G services, resulting in faster data speeds, improved call quality, and greater service stability for tens of millions of customers .
- M-Pesa and IT Infrastructure Upgrade: The investment includes cutting-edge enhancements to the IT infrastructure that supports M-Pesa, Vodacom’s market-leading mobile financial service . This will translate to more stable and secure mobile money transactions, which are crucial for financial inclusion and the daily lives of many Tanzanians .
- Commitment to Greener Technology: Aligning with the wider Vodacom Group’s “Net Zero 2035” ambition, the modernization will incorporate energy-efficient technologies to reduce network power consumption by up to 30% . This includes deploying Huawei’s “zero-bit-zero-watt” technology, which improves power efficiency and reduces carbon emissions while boosting network performance . The company is also optimizing tower space with multi-band radio technology to accommodate multiple spectrums more efficiently .
Strategic Alignment and Impact
The Vision 2030 program is built around three central pillars: people, planet, and trust . This framework ensures the initiative delivers broad-based benefits.
- Supporting National and Global Goals: The strategy is closely aligned with Tanzania’s national digital transformation agenda and contributes to the United Nations
- Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting its role in the country’s broader development .
- Empowering a Digital Tanzania: By building a more robust and inclusive digital economy, the investment aims to empower individuals and businesses, fostering innovation and connecting every Tanzanian to new opportunities . As Philip Besiimire, Managing Director of Vodacom Tanzania, stated, “With this investment, we are laying the groundwork for the next five years and beyond” .
