DAR ES SALAAM. Tanzania’s deepening economic partnership with Russia is opening new investment opportunities across strategic sectors, as government leaders’ move to strengthen trade, tourism, industrial cooperation, and cross‑border capital flows.
The momentum follows President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s state visit to Russia and engagements at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026, where Tanzania and Russia advanced cooperation in mining, energy, infrastructure, transport, agriculture, healthcare, and industrial development.
A key milestone is the launch of Air Tanzania’s direct flights between Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Moscow, scheduled to commence on July 2, 2026, the first direct air bridge between Tanzania and Russia.
“In the aviation sector, Air Tanzania will officially launch flights connecting Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Moscow on July 2 this year. This will be an important catalyst for promoting and strengthening tourism between our two countries,” President Samia said at SPIEF 2026.
Direct Connectivity Creates New Trade Corridor
Direct flights reduce transaction costs, shorten travel times, and facilitate business‑to‑business engagement. For Tanzania, the Moscow route creates a new gateway to Eurasia’s vast market while reinforcing its role as an East African hub.
Industry observers say the connection could stimulate increased activity in trade, logistics, tourism, and export‑oriented industries.
Mining and Energy Cooperation in Focus
Tanzania remains a leading African destination for investment in gold, graphite, nickel, rare earths, and lithium‑associated minerals. Russian firms bring expertise in exploration, processing, engineering, and energy infrastructure.
Potential opportunities include:
- Mineral processing and beneficiation
- Natural gas development
- Energy infrastructure
- Industrial manufacturing linked to resource sectors
Agriculture and Agro‑Processing Expansion
Tanzania’s exports of avocados, sesame, cashew nuts, coffee, tea, spices, and horticultural produce stand to benefit from direct connectivity. Investors are eyeing opportunities in agro‑processing, packaging, cold‑chain logistics, and export infrastructure.
Tourism Gains Fresh Catalyst
Russia represents a sizeable outbound tourism market. Easier travel access is expected to boost arrivals to Zanzibar, Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, and Tanzania’s conference tourism sector, reinforcing growth ahead of AFCON 2027.
President Samia Invites Investors
At the Tanzania-Russia Business Forum, President Samia highlighted opportunities in mining, agriculture, oil and gas, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, transport, and logistics.
She emphasised Tanzania’s role as a gateway to Eastern and Southern Africa, supported by expanding transport corridors, ports, railways, and industrial infrastructure.
Investor Lens: Tanzania as a Regional Platform
The partnership reflects Tanzania’s broader strategy of diversifying international ties while strengthening its position as a regional investment platform. The country offers:
- Access to East and Central African markets
- Strategic Indian Ocean connectivity
- Expanding infrastructure networks
- Abundant natural resources
- Growing consumer demand
- A developing industrial base
Growth Prospects
The strengthening Tanzania-Russia relationship arrives as Tanzania pursues industrialisation, export growth, and regional integration. The launch of direct Moscow flights marks a tangible step in that process, creating new pathways for trade, tourism, and investment.
For investors, the message is clear: Tanzania is not only strengthening partnerships, it is building the connectivity and commercial platforms needed to convert them into real economic opportunity.
