Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s rapidly expanding mobile‑money market is emerging as one of the country’s most significant digital investment opportunities, with active mobile‑money accounts reaching 87.05 million and transactions exceeding 2.1 billion in the quarter ending June 2026.

The latest figures from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), reported on September 1 as part of the government’s cashless‑economy agenda, highlight a financial ecosystem operating at unprecedented scale. Active subscriptions rose 7.5 percent, from 80.98 million in March to 87.05 million in June, while quarterly transactions increased 5.38 percent.

How the Fintech Festival Tanzania 2026 Can Power the Next Stage of the Country’s Digital Economy

For investors, the significance extends beyond wallet growth. The expanding transaction base is creating demand for the technology, infrastructure and financial services that underpin digital payments.

From Mobile Money to a Broader Fintech Economy

Tanzania’s market is dominated by M‑Pesa, Mixx by Yas and Airtel Money, which together account for about 89 percent of subscriptions. M‑Pesa leads with 40.6 percent, followed by Mixx by Yas at 32 percent and Airtel Money at 16.4 percent.

This concentration, combined with the sheer scale of users, creates a sizeable platform for businesses developing complementary fintech solutions. Investment opportunities include payment infrastructure, merchant solutions, digital lending, financial APIs, cyber security, fraud detection, and SME‑focused platforms.

A Market Moving Beyond Basic Payments

The scale of transactions is opening space for products that help businesses and consumers use digital finance more efficiently.

For SMEs, this could mean digital accounting platforms, automated reconciliation, and embedded financial services. For banks, opportunities lie in transaction analytics, digital credit risk tools, and fraud‑management systems.

TCRA’s Q2 data also shows Tanzania’s wider digital market expanding: total telecom subscriptions reached 117 million, internet subscriptions climbed to 62.79 million, data traffic rose 11.65 percent to 1,041 petabytes, and smartphone penetration hit 44.74 percent.

The Cashless‑Economy Push

The government’s push for electronic payments is central to this growth. The September 1 reporting described mobile‑money expansion as part of Tanzania’s broader move toward a cashless economy.

For investors, this policy direction matters: sustained adoption of digital payments creates demand for infrastructure that makes transactions faster, safer and more interoperable.

It is also important to note that TCRA’s figure represents active subscriptions, accounts used at least once in the past three months rather than 87 million unique individuals.

Investor Outlook

Tanzania’s mobile‑money expansion is increasingly becoming an infrastructure and fintech investment story rather than simply a telecom story.

With more than two billion transactions in a single quarter, the opportunity is shifting toward businesses that can make the ecosystem more efficient: payment technology, merchant platforms, cyber security, digital financial services, and SME solutions.

For investors, the value lies not in the wallet itself, but in the ecosystem being built around it.
