DAR ES SALAAM. Tanzania is positioning itself to attract greater investment from Asia following the signing of key economic cooperation agreements with Singapore, a move that government officials and business leaders say could unlock new opportunities across logistics, technology, manufacturing, and infrastructure.

The agreements were signed during the state visit of Singapore President Hon. Tharman Shanmugaratnam to Tanzania on 9 June 2026, marking a significant step in efforts to deepen economic relations between the two countries.

Among the most notable outcomes was the signing of a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), designed to eliminate the risk of investors being taxed twice on the same income in both jurisdictions. The two countries also signed agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in digital transformation and technology development.

“Singapore’s expertise in finance and logistics will help Tanzania accelerate its industrialisation and digital transformation. These agreements mark a new chapter in our economic partnership,” said President Hon. Samia Suluhu Hassan during the signing ceremony at State House in Dar es Salaam.

“Our response must be to build bridges – including between Asia and Africa, and among countries that believe openness and partnership still offer the best path forward. Singapore and Tanzania have today taken practical steps in that direction, both bilaterally and as gateway economies which can catalyse greater trade and investment flows between our respective regions,” said President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the joint press conference.

Lower Barriers, Greater Investment Potential

The DTAA is widely viewed as a critical tool for promoting cross‑border investment. By reducing tax‑related uncertainties and improving transparency, the framework is expected to make it easier for businesses and investors to structure operations, deploy capital, and expand commercial activities between Tanzania and Singapore.

Economic analysts note that such agreements often serve as catalysts for increased foreign direct investment by improving predictability and lowering operational costs.

Digital Cooperation Opens New Growth Areas

Beyond taxation, the digital cooperation agreements highlight growing interest in Tanzania’s expanding digital economy.

Officials say cooperation with Singapore could support knowledge exchange and investment in areas such as:

  • Digital infrastructure
  • Data centres
  • Cloud computing
  • Financial technology
  • Smart logistics systems
  • E‑government services

Logistics and Trade Infrastructure in Focus

Singapore is internationally recognised for its expertise in logistics, ports, and trade facilitation. For Tanzania, which is investing heavily in the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), port modernisation, and regional trade corridors, closer engagement with Singapore presents opportunities to accelerate commercial development.

Industry observers note that Tanzania’s strategic location on the Indian Ocean positions it as a natural gateway for trade serving East and Central Africa.

Investor Lens: Tanzania as a Regional Platform

The significance of the Tanzania-Singapore partnership extends beyond bilateral relations. Investors increasingly view Tanzania as a platform for accessing one of Africa’s fastest‑growing regions, supported by:

  • Strategic geographic location
  • Expanding infrastructure
  • Growing consumer markets
  • Natural resource wealth
  • Increasing digital adoption
  • Regional trade integration

Singapore’s participation adds another layer of confidence by linking Tanzania more closely to global capital markets, technology ecosystems, and international business networks.

Growth Prospects

As Tanzania continues to expand its infrastructure, digital economy, and industrial base, stronger ties with Singapore could help accelerate investment flows and commercial activity across multiple sectors.

The combination of improved tax frameworks, digital cooperation, and growing trade engagement is expected to create a more favourable environment for businesses seeking opportunities in East Africa.

For investors, the message is clear: Tanzania is not only strengthening international partnerships, it is building the institutional and commercial foundations needed to attract the next generation of global capital.
