Tanzania is positioning its agricultural sector for greater industrial investment following plans by Indian food manufacturer BL Agro to invest approximately $739 million in the country over the next ten years. The proposed investment will focus on edible oil production, dairy farming, animal husbandry, agricultural research and food manufacturing.
The expansion marks BL Agro’s first planned overseas production base as the family-owned company seeks to enter the wider East African market. The investment programme is expected to combine Tanzania’s agricultural resources with Indian processing technology and industrial expertise and create opportunities to increase local production.
Sunflower Oil Processing Leads the Investment Plans
The first major project is a vegetable oil production complex expected to become operational within three years. The facility is intended to process locally produced oilseeds, including sunflower seeds, and supply the domestic market with edible oil.
Tanzania has an established sunflower-growing sector, making the crop a potential source of raw materials for industrial processing. However, the opportunity extends beyond agricultural production to the development of processing facilities capable of converting harvested crops into higher-value products.
Dairy Farming and Animal Husbandry to Expand Agricultural Investment
The company plans to explore modern dairy infrastructure and cattle breeding as it expands beyond its traditional edible-oil business. Its proposed operations could connect livestock breeding, milk production, processing and distribution within one supply chain
For Tanzania, potential opportunities include dairy processing facilities, livestock breeding services, animal feed production, cold-chain infrastructure and distribution networks.
East African Markets Offer a Potential Growth Opportunity
BL Agro is targeting Tanzania as a base for expansion into the East African market.
The country’s agricultural production and access to neighbouring markets supports a regional business model in which raw materials are sourced locally, processed domestically and distributed to consumers across East African markets.
For food manufacturers, establishing production facilities closer to consumers can create opportunities to develop regional distribution networks and respond to demand for packaged food products.
Employment, Technology Transfer and Local Supply Chains
BL Agro’s managing director, Ashish Khandelwal, has identified opportunities to improve agricultural and livestock productivity through technology, investment and stronger local partnerships.
Tanzania’s High Commissioner to India, Anisa K. Mbega, also welcomed the proposed investment, highlighting its potential to introduce technology, create employment, develop skills and increase value addition for farmers.
Investment Outlook
For Tanzania, the proposed investment comes at a time when expanding domestic manufacturing, attracting foreign capital and increasing the value of locally produced agricultural commodities remain important opportunities for economic growth.
BL Agro’s investment presents a promising opportunity for Tanzania to strengthen its agricultural and manufacturing sectors, as it offers investors opportunities to establish production facilities, develop local supply chains and expand into East Africa.
