MOROGORO – The Mkulazi Agricultural City, located in Ngerengere, Morogoro Region, has been identified as an investment opportunity in crop farming, livestock keeping, and industrial production, with the aim of integrating agricultural production with domestic and international markets.
The area, which falls under the Tanzania Investment and Special Economic Zones Authority (TISEZA), covers approximately 30,000 hectares and is envisioned as a hub for commercial agriculture and agro-processing industries.
Investment opportunities include the cultivation of rice, maize, soya beans, and other crops, as well as the establishment of sugar factories, edible oil processing plants, processed food industries, animal feed production facilities, and other agro-based industries.
Why Mkulazi Matters to Investors
Large-scale agricultural production
Mkulazi offers opportunities for commercial farming, including sugarcane, maize, soybeans and other crops suited to the project’s agricultural plans.
Businesses can participate in agricultural inputs, irrigation, mechanisation, farm management, harvesting and the supply of equipment and services.
Agro-processing and value addition
Another opportunity lies in processing agricultural produce before it reaches the market. Investors can establish facilities that manufacture finished or semi-processed products.
Potential areas include sugar production, edible oils, animal feed, food processing, grain storage, packaging and related industrial services.
Access to domestic and regional markets
Tanzania offers a market for agricultural produce, processed foods and industrial products, with potential customers including households, retailers, food manufacturers and other businesses.
Through the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), investors can also explore regional markets for products such as sugar, edible oils, animal feed and processed foods, subject to market demand, competition, trade requirements and distribution costs.
Water resources and infrastructure
The area benefits from water resources associated with the Ruvu and Ngerengere rivers, which could support irrigation and water-dependent industrial activities, subject to availability, access and sustainable water management.
Also, its proximity to the Ngerengere Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station also offers potential logistical advantages for transporting agricultural produce, industrial inputs and finished goods to Dar es Salaam and other destinations connected to the railway network.
Supporting Tanzania’s Industrial Development
Mkulazi’s proposed integration of agriculture and industry aligns with Tanzania’s broader objective of attracting investment into manufacturing activities that use locally available resources.
The project also has potential to support employment across farming, manufacturing, transportation, maintenance and commercial services.
For investors looking to participate in Tanzania’s agricultural and industrial value chains, Mkulazi is a project worth assessing.
