Agro-Processing Gap Opens New Investment Opportunities

European investors are being pitched opportunities in coffee, cashew, rice and edible-oil processing as Tanzania seeks to capture more value from its agricultural production.

DAR ES SALAAM. Tanzania is stepping up efforts to attract international capital into agro-processing, positioning value addition as the next phase of growth for its agricultural sector.

The latest push came through the European roadshows of the EU-Tanzania Investment & Business Forum 2026-2027, which concluded on October 6 after business engagements in Finland, Italy and the Netherlands. The programme connected Tanzanian institutions with European investors, companies and financiers interested in agriculture, digital innovation and industrial development.

Agriculture emerged as one of the strongest areas of interest, with Tanzania promoting opportunities in coffee, cashew, rice and edible-oil value chains while encouraging investors to move beyond commodity trading and into local processing.

Moving Beyond Raw Exports

A central message throughout the roadshows was the need to process more agricultural products inside Tanzania before they reach international markets.

At the final roadshow in The Hague, Tanzanian investment agencies highlighted opportunities in coffee roasting, cashew processing, edible oils and other agri-processing industries. European investors, particularly from the Netherlands, showed interest in food production, value addition and agribusiness technologies.

The strategy aligns with Tanzania’s broader industrialisation agenda, which seeks to increase manufacturing output, create jobs and strengthen export earnings.

More than Processing Plants

The opportunity extends well beyond factories.

Modern agro-processing requires storage facilities, packaging systems and processing equipment, logistics networks and irrigation, infrastructure and quality-control systems. Roadshow participants also discussed financing instruments designed to support private-sector investment and project development.

Business matchmaking sessions brought together investors, financial institutions and Tanzanian stakeholders to explore potential partnerships and investment projects.

Regional Markets Strengthen the Case

In addition to serving the domestic market, processors can access consumers across the East African Community, SADC and the African Continental Free Trade Area, creating opportunities for export-oriented production and regional value chains. Tanzania’s location continues to be one of its strongest advantages.

Investor Outlook

For investors, the opportunity is no longer simply to buy and export agricultural commodities.

The bigger opportunity lies in building businesses that process, package and distribute higher-value products while linking farmers to commercial supply chains.

As Tanzania works to convert investor interest into factories, processing plants and export-oriented agribusinesses, agro-processing is increasingly emerging as one of the country’s most compelling industrial investment opportunities.
