DODOMA. Tanzania has opened one of its clearest agribusiness investment pipelines after launching the National Poultry Development Strategy (NPDS) 2026-2036, which targets TZS 3.5266 trillion in investment over the next decade.
The strategy, unveiled by Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba on August 1, 2026 at the Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition in Dodoma, places poultry at the centre of Tanzania’s plans to strengthen food security, employment, trade and private‑sector‑led agricultural growth. Of the total investment requirement, more than TZS 2.14 trillion (about US$807.6 million) is expected to come from private investors.
Feed and Breeding: The Largest Investment Pillar
The NPDS allocates TZS 1.601 trillion to feed and breeding inputs, making this the single largest investment pool.
Opportunities include commercial feed mills, feed‑storage facilities, breeding farms, hatcheries, genetics, and the supply of day‑old chicks.
Processing and Markets: Value Addition Opportunities
Another TZS 1.001 trillion is allocated to processing, markets and trade.
This creates opportunities in modern slaughterhouses, processing plants, packaging, cold‑chain logistics, and distribution infrastructure.
TISEZA already identifies commercial layer and broiler farms, large‑scale hatcheries, and broiler‑processing facilities as priority investment areas.
Production Targets Signal Expanding Demand
By 2036, Tanzania aims to increase annual poultry meat production from 156,000 tonnes to more than 380,000 tonnes, while egg output is expected to rise from 7.1 billion to over 17 billion eggs annually. Poultry’s contribution to GDP is targeted to grow from 1.8% to 3%.
These targets underscore the need for expanded production capacity across the entire value chain.
Integrated Investment Opportunities
The NPDS framework allows investors to enter at different points rather than building entire businesses from scratch.
Potential areas include: commercial farms, breeding and genetics, feed manufacturing, processing and packaging, cold‑chain logistics, veterinary services, and distribution networks.
Broiler‑processing plants are expected to serve as hubs for small and medium‑scale producers, linking large investors with domestic farmers.
Investor Outlook
The NPDS provides investors with a 10-year policy and investment framework, backed by government commitment and clear sectoral targets.
For investors, the opportunity is no longer simply to raise chickens. Tanzania is building a commercial poultry ecosystem, from genetics and hatcheries to feed, farms, processing, cold storage and distribution with more than US$800 million in private investment identified within the national strategy.
That makes poultry one of Tanzania’s most clearly defined agribusiness investment opportunities in 2026.
