Tanzania’s “Green Gold”: How Avocado Farming Is Creating Jobs and Driving Agribusiness Growth

Tanzania’s avocado industry is rapidly becoming one of the country’s most promising agribusiness sectors, earning the nickname “green gold” due to its growing economic value. The crop is transforming rural livelihoods by creating employment opportunities, attracting investment, and opening new income streams for young Tanzanians.

Regions such as Njombe, Iringa, Mbeya, and Songwe are at the centre of this agricultural transformation, with farmers increasingly shifting from traditional farming practices toward commercial avocado production.

The growth of the sector reflects Tanzania’s broader ambition to develop a competitive agricultural economy driven by value addition, exports, and private sector investment.

Youth Turning Agriculture Into Business

For many young Tanzanians, agriculture was once viewed as a sector with limited financial prospects. However, the avocado boom is changing this perception by creating opportunities across the entire value chain.

Young entrepreneurs are now participating in businesses such as seedling production, farm services, transportation, aggregation, and export supply.

Njombe Regional Commissioner Anthony Mtaka highlighted the economic potential of avocado seedlings, noting that:

“If you sell 10,000 seedlings at Sh5,000 each, you can earn Sh50 million.”

The statement demonstrates how agricultural entrepreneurship is creating opportunities beyond owning farmland, allowing young people to participate in profitable businesses within the agricultural ecosystem.

From Fresh Fruit to Value-Added Products

The development of avocado processing facilities is adding a new dimension to Tanzania’s avocado industry.

Previously, fruits that failed to meet export standards often generated lower returns for farmers. However, processing investments are creating new markets by converting these avocados into products such as avocado oil and other value-added goods.

This shift supports Tanzania’s goal of moving away from exporting raw agricultural products toward processing and manufacturing, which generates more jobs and increases economic returns.

Investment Opportunities Across the Avocado Value Chain

The growth of Tanzania’s avocado sector presents investment opportunities in several areas, including:

Agro-Processing

Investors can explore opportunities in avocado oil production, cosmetics, food processing, and other value-added products that can serve both domestic and international markets.

Agricultural Inputs

Growing demand for commercial orchards is increasing opportunities in certified seedlings, fertilizers, irrigation systems, farming equipment, and agricultural technology solutions.

Logistics and Export Infrastructure

As production increases, investment opportunities are emerging in cold storage, packaging, transportation, and export logistics to improve market access and reduce post-harvest losses.

Youth Agribusiness Development

Supporting young entrepreneurs through financing, training, and market connections can accelerate participation in the avocado value chain.

Challenges Facing the Sector

Despite its impressive growth, Tanzania’s avocado industry still faces challenges, including limited access to affordable financing, the need for improved farming knowledge, quality standards for international markets, and infrastructure gaps.

Addressing these challenges will be critical to ensuring that farmers, entrepreneurs, and investors benefit from the sector’s long-term potential.

Tanzania’s Green Gold and the Future of Agribusiness

The rise of avocado farming represents a major transformation in Tanzania’s agricultural landscape. What was once viewed as a small-scale farming activity is becoming a commercial industry with the potential to create jobs, increase exports, and attract investment.

With continued support for farmers, expansion of processing capacity, and stronger connections to global markets, Tanzania’s “green gold” could become one of the country’s leading agricultural success stories.

“The avocado sector is not only about farming; it is about building an entire value chain that creates employment, encourages entrepreneurship, and drives economic growth.”

Tanzania’s avocado industry offers opportunities beyond cultivation, creating an integrated agribusiness ecosystem spanning production, processing, logistics, and international trade.
