DAR ES SALAAM; The Government of Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding local production of medicines, vaccines, and medical equipment as part of efforts to position the country as a healthcare manufacturing hub in Africa.

Minister of Health Hon. Mohamed Mchengerwa made the remarks during the foundation stone laying ceremony for a pharmaceutical and medical equipment industrial complex in Mloganzila, Dar es Salaam. He was accompanied by Minister of Communications and Information Technology Angela Kairuki.

Mchengerwa said the investment is expected to strengthen the production of medical supplies, create jobs, support technology transfer, and improve the availability of health products in the country.

He noted that the government will continue working closely with investors to ensure projects are implemented on time and investment challenges are resolved quickly.

“Tanzania has decided to become a producer of medicines and health products instead of continuing to depend on imports,” Mchengerwa said.

The minister added that Tanzania continues to attract investors due to its stable environment, improving infrastructure, energy availability, strategic ports, and growing workforce capable of supporting industrial development.

The government is encouraging investments that promote quality production, research, innovation, and local capacity building in the healthcare sector.

Additionally, the government has introduced a special green lane system to simplify access to permits, land, registration, and other essential services for major investors in the pharmaceutical sector.

Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa said the government will continue collaborating with the private sector, educational institutions, and development partners to ensure investments in healthcare industries are aligned with research, training, and human capital development.

“We are ready to cooperate with both local and foreign investors in strengthening the production capacity of medicines and medical equipment, a move aimed at making the country a leading hub for health product manufacturing in Africa,” said Mchengerwa.

The latest investment push is expected to increase foreign direct investment, expand industrial development, reduce reliance on imported medical products, and strengthen Tanzania’s position as a regional center for healthcare manufacturing and supply in Africa.
