Ruvuma Regional Mining Officer, Engineer Alphonce Bikulamchi, said the expansion of coal exploration, mining and processing activities has played a major role in strengthening both the regional and national economy.

He explained that the coal is widely used in cement production, metal refining and other industrial sectors, while exports have expanded into regional markets including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“Ruvuma coal mines have continued to attract investors due to the quality of the minerals, which has helped open new markets in some Asian and European countries,” said Engineer Bikulamchi.

His remarks highlight how Tanzania’s mining sector is increasingly gaining international recognition, especially as industries worldwide continue searching for reliable energy resources and industrial raw materials.

Apart from exports and industrial use, mining companies in the region are also investing in clean energy alternatives through the production of coal-based briquettes and environmentally friendly charcoal.

Jitegemee Mine Sales and Operations Manager, Mark Tarimo, said the company has created more than 500 jobs through permanent employment and annual contracts, while exporting products to East African countries and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

As investment opportunities continue expanding, Engineer Bikulamchi has encouraged both domestic and international investors to explore opportunities available in Ruvuma’s mining sector. He also urged young people to participate in mining-related businesses such as transportation, logistics and support services.

The continued growth of coal production and clean energy initiatives positions Ruvuma as one of Tanzania’s emerging investment hubs in the mining and industrial energy sectors.
