Tanzania’s economy is no longer growing on promise alone, the numbers are now backing it up. Real GDP expanded by 5.9 percent in 2025, up from 5.6 percent in 2024, pushing the economy to roughly 91.8 billion US dollars, and the government is projecting 6.3 percent growth for 2026 as the country moves from its Vision 2025 development plan into the newly adopted Vision 2050. Foreign direct investment climbed even faster: FDI inflows rose 28.3 percent to 1.72 billion US dollars in 2024, up from 1.34 billion US dollars in 2023, according to the World Investment Report.

Growth on that scale changes what investors and regulators expect from businesses operating inside it. It is no longer enough to be growing. Companies now need to prove they can manage that growth efficiently, and that is where automation has moved from a nice-to-have to a basic requirement.

From Manual Operations to Real-Time Management

For much of Tanzania’s business history, operations ran on paper ledgers, spreadsheets passed between departments, and stock counts done by hand at closing time. That worked when transaction volumes were low. It does not hold up in an economy where the Tanzania Instant Payment System processed 651 million transactions worth roughly 55 trillion shillings in 2025, up from 453 million transactions worth about 29.8 trillion shillings in 2024, and where the government has made digital payments mandatory across public transport, education, retail, and land transfers starting July 2026.

Business management software is what lets companies keep pace with that shift. Instead of updating inventory by hand, systems adjust stock the instant a sale happens. Instead of chasing overdue invoices through email, platforms flag them automatically. The value isn’t convenience for its own sake, it is that a business running on automated systems produces cleaner, more current financial data exactly when regulators and investors are asking for it.

Why This Matters for Investors

Tanzania’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has been explicit that this shift is deliberate. Minister Angellah Kairuki has framed the country’s technology sector as central to Vision 2050’s ambition of building a prosperous, knowledge-based economy, with digital transformation identified as one of five key drivers expected to accelerate national development over the next quarter century. That target is not modest: the plan calls for Tanzania to become an industrialised, upper-middle-income economy with a GDP of one trillion US dollars by 2050.

For investors doing due diligence, a company’s internal systems are increasingly part of that story. A business with automated stock, credit, or reporting systems produces auditable records with less manual intervention, which means fewer of the discrepancies that slow down deal timelines. It also scales without the proportional headcount growth that once made expansion expensive. Consistent with the finance sector, financial and insurance services recorded the fastest sectoral growth in the economy at 15.7 percent in 2025, and much of that growth has run through better-automated credit and payment infrastructure rather than simply more branches.

Levelling the Playing Field

The government has also started backing this shift with capital. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology allocated 5 billion shillings to help small and medium enterprises and start-ups access capital, with 50 companies expected to benefit through commercial banks, part of a broader push to get more SMEs onto formal, digitised operating systems. That kind of support matters because it narrows the operational gap between small and large businesses. A growing agribusiness or a young microfinance provider no longer needs the administrative bench that larger, older competitors built up over decades. With the right systems, it can run with comparable discipline from day one.

That demand is already producing local solutions. Imarasoft is one example: a Tanzanian-built platform offering modules for retail, hospitality, manufacturing, credit management, agribusiness, education, and healthcare. Rather than importing rigid, one-size-fits-all software, tools like this are built around how Tanzanian businesses actually operate, which is a meaningful shift from relying entirely on foreign platforms not designed for the local market.

Looking Ahead

As Tanzania continues strengthening its investment climate through policy reform and infrastructure development, the businesses best positioned to benefit will be the ones that have already modernised how they operate internally. Automation is not a peripheral trend, it is becoming a baseline expectation for companies competing for capital, customers, and market share.

The question facing Tanzanian businesses today is no longer whether to automate. It is how quickly they can catch up to the operational standards that investors, both local and international, now expect.
