WASHINGTON – The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has finalized its reviews of Tanzania’s economic reform programmes under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). This achievement triggers the immediate disbursement of $443.8 million, bringing the total funds received under these arrangements to over $1.69 billion. The disbursement reflects the IMF’s positive assessment of Tanzania’s economic reform programme.
The country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 5.9% in 2025, driven by strong economic fundamentals and surging gold exports that have successfully cushioned the nation against global import shocks. Furthermore, prudent monetary policy kept annual inflation tightly contained at 4.0% as of June 2026. For investors, these figures represent a predictable, low-risk environment capable of sustaining growth despite volatile global commodity markets.
Tanzania’s strong macroeconomic performance reflects the impact of ongoing economic reforms supported by the IMF. Commenting on the progress, IMF Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair Mr. Bo Li said “Amid external and domestic shocks, Tanzania’s reform program supported by the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) has enabled the authorities to maintain macroeconomic stability and advance reforms.”
The ongoing structural reforms are explicitly geared toward unlocking private sector potential and fostering long-term market stability. According to the IMF, Tanzania has successfully met key performance criteria by streamlining public financial management and improving VAT refund systems.
These reforms are expected to strengthen fiscal management, support infrastructure investment, and improve the business environment in line with Tanzania’s Vision 2050.
